It started in 1984 Several christian radios were created in category called “associatives” in France when the FM band was opened to private broascasters. That’s tanks to president François Mitterand. These new stations were even given financial help if they renounced to publicity, which was a blessing for the christian stations because the christians were rather timid in their financial help for those new liberties. Personnaly I was glad to give my time as a volunteer from the beginning. It was a pleasure during 24 years. What an adventure, everthing had to be learned. In the last years even our station became more professional or at least tried to from 1995 to now, even if it had a part time licence. The musical program became a lot more attractive and finally enabled the best results any local christian station ever had in France. The two latest surveys called “CSA Public of the associative radios” showed 35000 listeners around Strasbourg during the week. Not too bad for a part time station. That result still is the best of all local christian stations in France. These protestant (and evangelicals are also protestants) “micro” FM stations never shared effectively. That cost a lot of them their existence. Now in 2008 only around half are left over. They were all well managed and had volunteers but were not very professional and had a very low quality and impact. The stongest ones planned networks. One intended to share all of it’s programs and music leaving each participant with it’s own name ... the second project centralised the main program for all. That did help several stations find a new energy and hope. But the last project was not able to win new frequencies in new cities. The main reason was it’s default of local implication necessary for the associative categorie of radios. But in the near future they will all be locally present on the new digitalized multiplex bouquets opened to those local stations. And the financial help will continue, but might be lowered. And the cost of braodcasting will double. But they cover only about 4% of the population in analogic and even less in digital. Now in 2008 Personally I believe that the costs of digital broadcasting need a new approach. I am also a member of the board for public financial help for those local associative stations and feel that the support will decrease. What is necessary for the next 25 years? That’s why I believe in digital broadcasting for the next 25 years. The market does need stimulation with new receivers but there is no way out. I also believe that it makes sense that the fast growing evangelicals, which remain a branch of protestantism, should stand up and ask for their recognition in France. It’s the only branch of christianity having their churches full every week. Others are rather empty. We should ask to occupy the just place in the radio media being such an important part of the french society. But french evangelicals are piling their money into the buildings because they need more space for their congregations. On the other hand french do not yet financially support their ministries. That is why I believe that a natioanl protestant and evangelical commercial radio is the answer. It will also develop the christian music scene. Help us not waste another 25 years. !
